  14. <p>     DIED. Richard Speck, 49, drifter whose 1966 slaughter of
  15. eight student nurses in a Chicago residence horrified the nation;
  16. of a heart attack; in the Stateville Correctional Center in
  17. Joliet, Ill. Late on a July night, Speck broke into a South Side
  18. townhouse and stabbed and strangled eight of nine roommates. The
  19. sole survivor escaped by hiding under a bed. Speck was captured
  20. after an emergency-room surgeon, who was treating Speck
  21. following a suicide attempt, spotted on his arm a BORN TO RAISE
  22. HELL tattoo that the survivor had described.
