- <p> DIED. Richard Speck, 49, drifter whose 1966 slaughter of
- eight student nurses in a Chicago residence horrified the nation;
- of a heart attack; in the Stateville Correctional Center in
- Joliet, Ill. Late on a July night, Speck broke into a South Side
- townhouse and stabbed and strangled eight of nine roommates. The
- sole survivor escaped by hiding under a bed. Speck was captured
- after an emergency-room surgeon, who was treating Speck
- following a suicide attempt, spotted on his arm a BORN TO RAISE
- HELL tattoo that the survivor had described.
